“A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

On the night of 30st November at around 10.45 pm, we received a call at our helpline seeking help for a baby goat in Berhampore. As reported by the caller, the three months old kid was attacked and bitten by a pack of dogs the same evening. He was in immense pain and had multiple bite wounds over his body. Immediately the case was circulated in our group and one of our senior members Debasis Chatterjee agreed to attend the goat in the night. Within 30 minutes he was there on the spot. The goat was bleating incessantly. Debasis administered him painkillers and other first aid treatment was given to the kid. He then gave him a dose of Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) too. Fed him some warm milk and finally the goat slept cosily in his barn.  After a hectic day of many other cases, Debasis Chatterjee returned home at 1 am where his own adopted dog Olly was waiting anxiously. They both had a satisfying meal after that.

With regular dressing and subsequent follow up ARV schedule, the goat is normal now. When taken to veterinary hospital for a routine check-up, the veterinarian agreed that the timely medication and the Vaccine given to the goat only saved his life.

Braving the chilly winter night and ignoring his family engagements,
Debasis Chatterjee went out to help the poor animal. Due to his timely intervention a life was saved. When rest of us were snuggling in our blankets, sipping warm milk and watching TV, there was someone who needed help. Someone has to do it, someone must do it. Acts such as these gives our volunteers an inspiration to work better. Debasis Chatterjee is our Hero for this month.

Sh.Anand Gopal Dhar & Smt.Smita Dhar are both senior citizens and their perseverance is unmatched. They have been associated with AART since its inception and have been rendering voluntary service for animals tirelessly. They have had several such experiences with animals but this one was a miraculous rescue. Their dedication is an inspiration ..

In the breezy nights of February in Berhampore, Murshidabad, on one of the less crowded streets there laid a mother dog in semi-conscious state. Sick and malnourished, she hadn’t eaten for days. She had given birth to 4 puppies in Jan this year but all of them died in road accidents. She had no family left. Someone must have felt pity on her miserable condition and informed us. The same evening our members went to see her. Yes, she was in a bad state. She laid quiet on a bed of dirt and waste, eyes closed and shallow breathing. It seemed her end was almost near.

In a last frantic attempt, our members gave her a Dexamethasone injection. The member-couple waited there to see her fate. The injection worked. The members immediately then gave her the first-aid medication and the dog responded. In the next half hour, she was given IV fluids and other necessary medication. The dog was then comfortably placed in a temporary house beside the road. Day 2, the couple went back to check on her. She was now seen walking and searching for food. There was a sigh of relief. Again the dog was given the medications and fluids. The same evening, both the members took homecooked meal for the dog. She relished it like anything. Her face changed, her energy increased. The same routine was followed for continuous five days. And now the dog is happily playing on the same street where it was almost about to die. The couple still visits the dog every night and feeds her. The dog wags her tail as she hears their scooter’s sound.

This elderly couple is the senior most in the AART team. Sh. Anand Gopal Dhar & Smt. Smita Dhar are both senior citizens and their perseverance is unmatched. Dhar Kaku and aunty as they are fondly called by the team  have been associated with AART since its inception and have been rendering voluntary service for animals tirelessly. They have had several such experiences with animals but this one was a miraculous rescue. Their dedication is an inspiration to every animal lover. Keep going Kaku & Aunty
